I lived in Urmston from 1936 to 1952 when my family left to live here in North Wales. I have never forgotten my years in Urmston at first Urmston Council School and later Flixton Secondary School. I attended St. Clements Church in Urmston and also St. Clements Branch Church, in Humphrey Lane, Urmston where I used to play the piano for the hymns on a Sunday, I was a member of the Church Girls Brigade and I taught at the Sunday School. My late parents were Cyril and Roma Gill and they both worked very hard for the Branch Church arranging Concerts and Nativity Plays over the years. I can remember Dances being held at the Church Hall on a Friday night. My close friends were Dorothy and Irene Evans, I expect they have married and moved away by now. I loved my life in Urmston and although I am now settled in Wales I will always remember my childhood in Urmston.

Hi Dave/All.....Great site...Memories flooding back (I can almost hear John Lennon singing "In My Life" whilst reading through Times Gone By)
Although my time in Urmston ended rather abruptly around 68/69 (I would have been 12/13yrs old) when my parents took a pub in Bolton. I lived on Avondale Crescent and went to nursery on Moorside rd then Hereford/Ross Grove infants & juniors and on to Wellacre for my 1st & 2nd yrs of secondary school. I like many others have great memories of Urmston Baths, Saturday matinees at the Curzon, the parks Golden hill, Davyhulme, Broadway and Chassen Rd with the miniature steam engines. During my days at Wellacre I used to hang out with Dicky and Philip Bird (of Birds Butchers) on and around Bluebell valley slinging lumps of clay off canes at passing ships on the canal, building dens and riding an old moped Martin bird had acquired....Happy Days

I remember you Richard Harris! I lived 2 doors away with the Davies's in between! We used to hear how you were doing through letters from your mum to Mrs Davies. I remember as a kid with my sister Helen waving you off as you left for Australia. i was actually on the phone to my sister still in England, telling her about this site when i found your name. Remember the Lawrences the Coops and all our neighbours and going on Charabus rides to the seaside, Lytham St Annes I believe. I have lost touch with just about everyone and would love to hear from Jackie Dyer, Lynn Southall (remember watching the Monkees at your house). Where are Jane Leah and Carol?

Grew up in Flixton. Lived in Minehead Avenue. Great memories of playing on Urmston Meadows and swinging out across the Mersey on an old rope! Went to Urmston Primary and then on to Flixton Secondary Modern. Every morning as I turned the corner from Chassen Rd on to Flixton Rd, would pray the school had burnt down. Usually because I hadn't done my math homework.
Came to the States in 1971 after living in Paris. Still miss Manchester very much. It is the best place in the world with the best people.
In all the years have been in the States have only met one other person from Urmston.
Would love to hear from old school friends and neighbors.
Delighted to see Joan Harding on this sight. Used to email but lost touch with her.

To Lorraine Lewis:
Hi Lorraine, I am a lol now. My mother was named Nellie Hooson, and from the Flixton, Irlam area around the 1930's Do you know any of the Hooson Family? I think she had sisters called Muriel and Florence. She died very young at 25 so I know nothing about her. I wonder if it is a common Flixton name and if we are loosely related? I know nothing of her side of the family. Can you help? Thanks.

Grew up in Urmston in the 60's & 70's, went to Wellacre, worked at the Sewage Works, Smith & Robinsons in Trafford Park and the GEC before coming to the States in 1980. Been here ever since. I have been back a few times and I still think of it as home.

Tracing my family tree, and looking for relatives named Wood who lived in Stretford. One of the family was born at Winton Lodge, Manor Avenue, Urmston in the 1930's, and I wondered whether this was a private address or a clinic of some sort. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I love this site it brings back many good memories. I used to live in Alderley Road Flixton, from 1950 with my sisters Joyce Margaret and brother Ken who were all older than me. I went to Mardale Infants, Delemere Juniors, and Flixton girls school. I left in 1965. If anyone remembers me or any of my family I would love to hear from them. Thanks again for this site Pat Stephens nee Duckworth.
