Infant Schools
Topic posted by Sean's Mum... dated:22 June 2004
Hello, I have a little boy who will be three in December. As I am new to the area I have no knowledge of which are the "good" schools. I know I can get this info of OFSTED but I would prefer to get an insight from parents who already have their children at schools in this area. Thanks

Go look round some. Everyone wants different things from Infant school. You can see the teachers etc. and see if the children are happy.

This is for anybody be wanting to send their child to a Catholic school yet be struggling with their conscience, Should you want to return the Church but are too nervous to go then St Monicas are having a Mission Week which is ideal for 'lapsed' Catholics or non Catholics to come along to. I went back to the Church after an absence of some years (Mainly the youthful ones!) and have found it very welcoming and non judgemental. I spoke with Fr Charnock and he was most supportive.

The Mission starts on Monday 22nd March at 7.00pm in the Church, For a full program have a look at

My little boy has special needs and Flixton infants have been fantastic, a very good school indeed. They certainly care about every individual child.

Both my children attend English Martyrs which I have found to be an excellent school. As per previous posts, we have a great choice of really good schools in the area whether catholic or not. Re your move to Timperley, I have niece's and nephew's who attend St Hughes in Timperley which again is an outstanding school.

Have to agree with James - purposely moved into the catchment area for Flixton 14 years ago and have been really pleased wiith both the Infants and Juniors.

My older 2  will have left these brilliant schools in July and will miss going to the Juniors but my oungest is now at the nursery and even though she was only 3 in August she is always asking what this word means etc as she is being taught at her tender age.

The question of wether or not to choose the Catholic schools over Christian schools is a personal choice but as I had a Catholic upbringing I didnot want to be hypocritical and choose a religious school as I stopped attending mass when I was 18 - I am so glad I did because Flixton is outstanding in its own right.

Hi Elliet

We went for Flixton Infants when our little boy started last September. For us It was mainly a choice between Urmston and Flixton Infants as we are not religious and didn't want to pretend to be so!

We are more than happy with Flixton Infants but would have had no real issue with him going to Urmston Infants either. To be honest there are not many schools in the area that I would be worried about and Timperley has excellent schools as well.

Regards

James

My eldest child left Our Lady's last year and my youngest is still there.  I can honestly say that I couldn't pay for the schooling, care and love that they have had from their teachers.  The school is like one big family, my eldest, every day, still says that he wishes he was back at Our Lady's, even though he loves his new secondary school.  The school builds confidence in children and promotes excellent behaviour and very strong morals in the children who attend.  I now live out of the catchment area, but if I was to have a third baby, I would most definitely move house to ensure the child was able to attend Our Lady's.  I cannot praise the school enough!

I know this subject has been covered but a few years ago now, so wondering if anyone can offer advise as to the schools I am likely to send my little boy to in a few years time.
Our Lady's will be first choice, also options are English Martyrs and Flixton Infant/Juniors so any mums out there with info on these and others in the area would be appreciated.
We are considering a move possible either to Timperley to be closer family or within the area so be good to find out a bit more about schools
thanks

My 3 children have all gone through Flixton Infants, youngest is stll in the juniors. He has never had his lunchbox 'policed' thankgoodness, they would be appauled!! He has a real fear of trying 'new' foods and his main diet unfortunalty consists of extremely unhealthy food.

He has juice as he will only drink water under duress, and chocolate bar and packet of cheddars (slightly healthier than crisps!!) To compensate he does have yoghurt and eats apples at break time.

The day they start dictating what he can and can't eat, will be the day he comes home from lunch. Yes he doesn't have the healthiest lunch box but its better than starving for the day.

The schools are both fantastic and can't praise them enough, my two older children are doing fabulously due to a fantastic foundation laid by these schools. My daughter is on the gifted and talented list at the Girls school, and my oldest son is regularly getting A's and is now studying for his diploma in Engineering at Wellacre.

I can't comment on other schools as I have only had dealings with Flixton, but I think the fact last September they were turning away children due to being overfull says it all really.

Agree Woodhouse is a good school.
Took my children from St Marys to attend Woodhouse and the results spoke for themselves.

My daughter attends Flixton Infants, and I occasionally put 'naughty' things in her lunchbox -e.g a chocolate bar, and I have never been challenged about what was in it. I would not let that put me off a school even if it was true! It is a fantastic school, and my daughter loves it.

Best school by far Woodhouse Primary would not send my children anywhere else it is and always has been my first choice. Long may it continue its excellent progress.

I heard Flixton Inf & Jun's police lunch boxes. That would seriously put me off a school. I'm all for healthy eating but what I put in a lunch box is my business alone. I expect some of you will disagree. I do think Ofstead reports give only a tiny snippet of the school - and they get warning that they are descending so can 'put on a good show'. You need to look round a few schools and compare the atmosphere. I think we have some excellent primary schools in the area, people are looking for different things for their child. The reception teacher at Woodhouse is divine. She is a fabulous teacher and obviously adores children. Long may she reign at Woodhouse! (well until my smallest has been through).

I would only consider Flixton Infant & Junior School .. It is a wonderful school with Outstanding ofsted reports. my children both now at senior school had many happy years there.i have had experience of Davyhulme Infant & Junior school and personally would not rate it anywhere near Flixton.

St Monicas in Flixton is a brilliant school. My daughter is in year 2 now and has been going there since nursey, you don't have to be a Catholic now either to go to the school (although my daughter is).

Personally I would put Kingsway right at the bottom. This is based on my personal experience in having a child attend and hating everything about it.

I agree with Claire - Woodhouse is a fantastic school. We have some superb teachers. Also the special education offered is excellent. My smallest has selective mutism and the school have been wonderful. We actually bought our house in the catchment area deliberately because my eldest child attended Woodhouse. The new head is excellent. They always deal with problems quickly and the children are taught well. Have a look round. The staff care about the children being happy and settled as well as ensuring they reach their academic ability - unlike some primary schools.

I have children in Woodhouse which is very close to St Mary's - are you discounting this? Woodhouse is an excellent school - a real family with lovely staff especially for those first few vital years. My children love school, and the new head is trying to build on the already high standards - you should go for a look round

I know there is a forum for Infant schools in general but as it goes back a couple of years, I have started a new one.
Our little boy will be starting infant school in Sept'09 and it's time for us to put our preferred choices down.
We've got appointments with a couple in the next week or so, but I wondered if anyone reading currently has any children in :
Davyhulme Infants
St Mary's CofE
Kingsway
Barton Clough
Out of those 4, we're trying to decide which order to put as a preference as we are nearby to all 4.
I've read ofsted reports and will make my own opinion when visiting, but I'd be grateful for any up to date experiences aswell? Thanks

He will be entitled to a school nursery place next September and will start school full time in September 2010 when he will be 4 1/2yrs old.
My advice would be to visit schools in your area then make a decision based upon talking to the Head teacher and your visit

Emmanuelle. I can only say about Woodhouse school. My daughter went to Nursery first in the mornings, to get her used to the school, then when the new school year started and she was four - she went into the reception class. She loved this school with all her heart and still goes to visit on half days - and she is 14 now. The best is to have a word with the head, they will tell you of all the options. Best of luck x

Hi,

I need a bit of advice really… I am French and the schooling system is not the same in Uk and I am bit confused…My little boy will be 3 and ½ next September and I would like to know if he will be able to be full time at school or not. He is at the moment in Nursery and I wonder if have to start to find him a school for next year. I am French and the schooling system is not the same in UK and I am bit confused…In France he would be able to be there all day but I have been told that in Uk it would be only for few hours and then I will need to take him back to his nursery…Is that correct?
The other question is which school???
Our Lady of The Rosary R.C. Primary School
English Martyrs’ rc
St Monica’s RC primary School
WoodHouse primary school
Abbotsford School
Or any other school that I have not mentioned
The other thing is that he will be a bit different than the other children as he speaks 3 languages…Do you think that there is chance of him being bullied or be laughed at??

Thanks to anyone who answers

Emmanuelle

Rob, I have no idea why she is totally discounting Acre Hall, personally from reports I have heard it is a very good school. I have not personally had any dealings with it, as all my children have attended Flixton Infants, and the reason for that is because we are very much in the catchment area, right near by!!

There has been a shortages of spaces for reception children since Woodsend primary closed. Flixton Infants lost a class a few years ago due to lack of funds to pay for extra teacher. This class room is now put to very good use as a special needs class room, but it is still a loss of 20 odd places.

Apparantly there is a very large number of children this year entering reception, which also is not helping.

The catchment area limit for Flixton Infants is the Red Lion side of Goldsworthy Road. I am hoping in 2 years that living within the catchment area will allow my youngest to attend this excellent school - I've just read the Ofsted report but I have always known that the school was good when my other children attended there. I want my youngest to have the same education at the Infants and Juniors which both have Outstanding in their last reports.

Well done staff and pupils for achieving this excellent result.

An infant class can only hold 30 children so appealing will not get you anywhere if the school is full.
If there are 15 on a waiting list I bet at least 14 will be disappointed. There are not going to be many parents changing their minds.
Urmston infants is full for Reception- again they have a waiting list.
Ofsted reports are not the be all though. You need to go to schools, look around, meet staff and children. see if it is the right place for your child and their particular needs, strengths etc. You will get a feel for the place not just read facts and figures. An ofsted report is a snapshot in time. 2 days in the life of a school. The facts and figures are great and help you see what the school has to offer but I feel you need to check it out with a personal visit. As other posters have said if you are not in a school catchment then you need to look at more than one school and list this on the application you make to Trafford. Also being in the schools nursery is no guarentee that you will get a school place. Catchment area and older siblings in the school have higher ranking than a first child in family who live out of catchment.
