Help With BT Line

My BT line has gone dead all of a sudden, and BT say the line is testing OK. They are sending an engineer to check it next week but if the problem is in the house it will cost £116 call out and £99 an hour to fix it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have noticed that there is no master BT socket in the house (although BT insist there is one!). Does anyone know if we are allowed to get other telecommunications specialists to fix the problem or does it have to be a BT engineer (with the hugh price tag!)?
Any help/advice appreciated.

Plusnet seem to be getting good reviews for their internet service - if you are downloading less than 10GB (which in real money means you can surf as much as you like, send and receive 6,000 emails, view 5 hours of online video and download over 500 pop songs) then its only £5.99/month.

Has anybody switched from BT to Post Office Telephones, is there any problem with the Internet?
My BT Bill is £89.00 per quarter and I pay Tesco Internet £18.00 per month.
Being a Widower I hardly use the phone but the Internet has been a lifesaver.

Whoever you go with Herb, don't forget BT, as the wholesale provider, are still going to get a cut of your monthly fee :(

I recently switched everything to Tiscali and it was great to be shut of BT. As long as you understand that Tiscali's profit margin per customer is minuscule and therefore their customer service can be quite poor.

Our BT bill used to be ridiculous, we were paying far more in line rental than we were on actual calls, in fact if the BT bill was £60 at least £40 was in line rental.
We were offered a deal with Tiscali who we have our broadband with, whereby we pay no line rental and no call charges - guess what we did ???

We transferred from BT to TalkTalk. Line rental, Broadband and free ANYTIME landline phonecalls (upto 75 mins I think) for around £30 per month.
We did this because of the lousy customer service I was getting from them. No problems with TalkTalk though, specially seeing as though the broadband is upto 8Mb.

I had this problem this year, and the same result with the line test. I did opt to use BT to check the fault, and it was down to them. An operator advised me that if you carry out the self-test they advise (plugging two working 'phones into the test socket), and the line is dead, then it is their fault. Unfortunately, the automatic test they carry out when you 'phone them is less definite.

Herb.
I've moved my landline to the Post Office because of this huge price hike.

Has anyone realised that BT customers have been conned (& nothing to do with politics this time) with the introduction of the free weekend phone calls. The con is that, from 1st April 2008, BT have scrapped the 5 pence charge for a call up to an hour after 6.00pm. It only came to my notice after seeing that I had been charged 48 pence, + VAT, for a 32 minute local call at 7.30pm on 7th April.
I have complained to BT & their answer, quote, "Earlier, the evening and weekend call charges were at 4.5p per call up to an hour and the new rates are, the weekend calls are free for up to an hour but the call charges in the evenings are at 1.5p per minute plus a call set up fee of 6p for the first minute."
So BT customers, beware, now can anyone suggest where I should put my phone call business. I have been a loyal BT customer since 1971 & I now feel I want to ditch them.

Julie,
I had a problem like this over a year ago, my phone suddenly went dead. I did have lots of extension's all over the house, far too many, I finally found my master socket which is the really old small one in my bedroom! I had to disconnect all the ext and got it working myself (with my hubby's help of course) it took us ages, but I wasn't prepared to pay the charges from BT. It may be worth looking into if you have extensions etc. Good Luck!

All the wiring up to the master socket (or connection box) belongs to BT. Only they can touch it.
The reasons are mainly historical but they existed to prevent Mr Engineer in the exchange touching high voltage lines because of customers fiddling with things they didn't understand. Exchanges are digital so its not as important, but you're still not allowed to mess with things.

You don't have to have BT engineers to work on telephone wiring after it leaves the BT Master socket.

The small boxes were changed years ago and if memory serves me right (sic) there wasn't a charge.

Any engineer can fix it not just BT. I had a similar problem and found it was a carpet nail stuck in the cable.

It;s all BT property, and only they can work on it.
You don't have a master socket, then you probably have a small box mounted on your skirting board, with the phone wired directly to that? If you do, and they want to replace it, make sure you keep hold of it when they do - they're quite valuable little devices.

Do you have a broadband or SKY TV connection? If so disconnect these and see if problem persists.
