Flag Poles in local parks
Topic posted by Nicola... dated:15 June 2008
Can anyone tell me why the council have applied for flagpoles to be erected at a majority of our local parks? See http://www.trafford.gov.uk/cme/live/dynamic/DocMan2Document.asp?document_id=BD92A185-8FC4-4E81-BF11-1C7D5BC8ECDD. Is it just me or could this money not be put to better use?

Driving past Urmston Police Station today I was filled with pride to see the Union Jack flying. Why cannot we be like America and fly the flag always and be proud of it.

I have to admit they're not as expensive as I thought they would be. I'll look forward to seeing them in situ!

That's good news john3. Every public building in England should have to fly the Cross of St George! I had flag on my car this St George's day and always make a point of wearing a small flag on my lapel when wearing a suit.

I'm all for flags and flagpoles - I would prefer a national flag but I suppose the poles could fly the council inspired one normally and then national ones for public holidays etc. Might promote a bit of pride in otherwise uninterested people.

Graz,
Don't forget the planning permission first.

JohnM, you'll be pleased to know the St George's cross flys outside Stretford Public Hall everyday!

When the 'we haven't won a flag so we'll fly one we made up' scheme has ended, can I make a request to Trafford MBC? Rather than taking the flag poles down or letting them stand idle fly a Union Flag, or even better the cross of St George from them. Let's bring some national pride and 'Englishness' to Trafford!!

They're hardly expensive, might buy one myself for the back garden!

Dear All,
Thank you Divad you sum it up very well. Nicola the money is ring fenced so it can only be used for the flag pole with flag.

I think this is a nice idea. It is time the volunteers around the community were rewarded for their efforts in some small way. Many of these green spaces will never be able to compete with the more recognised parks that have better support and facilities available to them. To be awarded Green Flag status is an honour but the standards are high. The various “friends” don’t have money to do battle with the likes of Urmston Cemetery or Flixton House who have won this prestigious prize in the past.

Beside this there is not enough flag waving in general, it is time to show some colour. I say go ahead and show the world they are doing a fine job for the area.

Jonathan,

Surely the 'friends' and locals of the parks would rather money be spent on the parks than on a flag pole and I assume a flag to go on it! I'm sure the council could have used the money more effectively!

Jonathan,
Does this mean that they are not good enough for the green flag status so you have made your own up.

The Green Flag award is a national award scheme in recognition for all the hard work done in selected parks by the 'freinds of the parks' and council workers. Only a few were going to get to the Green Flag status and in so doing only these few would enjoy receiving the extra funding which went with this scheme.
Trafford concil have introduced their own scheme so that more parks along with their 'friends' groups and council workers can be recognised for all the hard work that they put into making our parks pleasent and relaxing places to visit.

Executive Member For The Environment.

Well it's not the green Flag award. There are approx 3 in Trafford and apart from the Ecology Park in Trafford Park I've not heard of the others! I'll just have to wait until the flag poles go up in that case!!

Reb your probably right on that one, however if the council put more dog mess bins in parks and emptied them now and again so that they don't stink, more people might use them, on the other hand I always have bags in my pocket for when my dog has a poop, and I take it home with me and ut it in my own bin!

I would say our parks would win the most "Dog Dirt in a Park" award without any problem.

What awards have the parks won then? It would seem that nearly all of our local parks have won an award!!
