Davyhulme Sewers
Topic posted by David Lyons... dated:01 December 2001
Does anyone know if there is a law that prevents the release of gasses into the atmosphere? I once studied English Law and vaguely remember that there is a term for such an event. If so, why is nobody taking legal action against NW Water for the smell that we have to suffer every summer?

In order to drive this through to the Courts I need to be in close contact with someone who is close by the works and is prepared to back up my cmplaint. I have found that this will be necessary after studyng the legal aspects. This will only involve you in co-operation and a sporadic amount of time, no financial cost's at all and you will not have to do anything except give me a bit of time and by time I mean only a few minutes, so if anyone out there who lives close by the works and does not like the smell is prepared to give me a little time and help during the coming few weeks, probably once or twice a week I will be very grateful. You may contact me either through this site or send me an email.

I sent my email at 08:39, Richard Pollitt responded by 09:34 with an offer to meet me tonight, which I have taken him up on. If nothing else, at least we have a responsive point of contact.

I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks Steak

Maybe others could drop a note on here when they have contacted the council. That way there is a record outside UU/council of the actual number of complaints submitted.

Cheers

Last week I made an official request that Trafford Council Serve an Abatement Notice on United Utilities for the Statutory Nuisance of the smell from the sewage works under the Environment Protection Act 1990.

Surprise surprise, I had a visit from Trafford today to discuss the problem with me, obviously the intention was to pay lip service and try to placate me but he soon realised that I was not going to go away quietly. After lengthy discussions and disagreements about various factors it appears that the main reason why Trafford will not do anything is because they do not receive enough complaints, I am waiting to find out from them how many complaints they have had over the last five years. I was told that they have only had five complaints in the last twelve months.

This is where I need your HELP I need everyone who lives in the area or works in the area that is being subjected to this smell to write a letter of complaint or send an email to the principal environmental health officer (pollution) details at the end of this thread. It would help a great deal if in your email or letter you state the date and time of the nuisance. Also to assist me to monitor any progress if you send me a note via my contact address on here just to advise me that you have made a complaint, date and time.

It is important that this is done as this is the only excuse that they have got at present for doing nothing so I am having to rely on everyone in assisting me with this fight, it is one I don’t want to lose but I cannot do it on my own

The person to send your complaint to is as follows.

As I'm sure I mentioned in another thread some time ago. As far back as 1993 I read about American sewage works that had all the settling tanks, filter-beds, etc. covered and connected by ducting to fans, pulling the air and odours through to filtration units so that little or no smell was emitted. Considering that Davyhulme sewage works is the largest in Europe (I think it still is) and is so close to residential and retail areas, surely such a system should have been considered for here a long time ago. Simple, practical and not that expensive. Funnily enough, I have worked on the design of sewage works and large odour extraction and filtration systems - just never with the two combined!

Reodorization is the answer.
I believe there is a reodorant called Sweet Pea that may help

Your poo has to end up somewhere, and it will smell wherever it lands.Unless you eat perfume

It's interesting reading articles like this, that the problem is still ongoing even in water treatment plants that were built as late as 2000. Do you think one day they will simply admit that the Davyhulme smell will never go away?

Gillykins,
I agree totally, the smell drove me away in 1970, I moved to Hale and moved back after 6 months and been here since, but I think we do need to get something done about the stench, at times it is sickening.

Daveyhume, This gentleman visited me last February and explained to me all about the Sewage Works. It is no use comments being posted on the Forum by people who do not action their problem and leave it to others. I have done my bit by bringing my complaint to the attention of those concerned and at 80 I am trying to take life a little easier.

EricJ and Roady, I think you need to check first. He used to be the Treatment Manager, but I understand that he has now left the company.

I will be the peoples rep for Urmston! I shall find this chaps e-mail address and send a huffy note to him regarding this, no one should have to put up with a smell like that these days.

I am losing my love for Urmston what with the smells and the constant noise and disturbance even on our cul-de-sac, be just my luck to put the place up for sale and the viewers will be met by an awful whiff from the plant and a load of teens making a foul mouthed racket :(

Roady, I have just found the name of the Treatment Manager at Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works, his name is Richard Goldsmith. He visited me because of comments I made to the Messenger and I learnt a lot about how the System works.
You can get in touch with Mr Goldsmith and he will visit you, I look forward to you publishing his comments on the Forum, in fact you can be the peoples representative for Davyhulme.

There was a sweet smell at 9.am this morning on the furthest end of Bent Lanes from the Retail Park, this is not unusual and one wonders what this smell is disguising.

How do they get away with it? the smell at the retail park this afternoon was disgusting, if any of the shop owners read this you may like to know you lost trade today as both the wife and I felt sick as soon as we got out of the car so we left.

United Utilities need to be brought to task. they charge ever more for water they cannot supply and have consistantly failed to solve this smell.

I am starting to wonder if it is a health hazard, it can't be doing the food outlets any favours can it??

I returned from a holiday in Sweden the other day and as soon as I got near the Trafford Centre in the taxi I could smell it.

The smell on Bent Lanes today at 8am was like a Hospital Ward, there was a disinfectant aroma in the air. Is the Sewage Works disguising one of their speciality smells.

I've just searched the front hallway & utility room for cat/dog poo. Lo and behold, I opened the door when I couldn't find it and it STINKS outside! It's nearly 1am. Off to spray some perfume....

Hi Gill,

Thanks for the reply, I just hope I've just had a unlucky week ! I did speak to someone who said the smell was bad at the moment due to the river being cleaned out which happens every 3 months but, I'm not sure how true this is.

Simone, I live on Amersham close Off Broadway - and have lived in the area for some time. I know it seems to smell at first and some days are worse than others, but rest assured you will become accustomed to it - I very rarely smell anything nowadays. The worse days are damp muggy days and to be honest - anything is better than the smell of my ex's socks about the place!!! Could be worse - you could live in the country with the smell of cow poo!!!
