Ask the Councillors

Now the Local Elections are over and many of us do not know how to contact a Councillor, it would be helpful to ask a question here and let the Councillors reply.
To start it off I ask the Councillors of Davyhulme West 'When will Davyhulme Road between Laburnum and Bowers be repaired to comply with Road Safety Regulations'
Re: Ask the Councillors
I'm posting a link here to a very dry (almost Open University c1980s) discussion on council efficiency. Despite its dryness, it does capture the current serious debate going on in councils across the country, in this case it's the procurement directors of Linconshire and Worcestershire; it could easily have been Trafford and Salford.
Responses to the cuts aired in the programme include a centralised project hub and greater reliance on the voluntary sector. My nagging worry is that these project hub's or Transformation (Trafford's version) always recruit new staff and add to the bill; in times of crisis we always seem to need a new level of management to tell the old level of management what it should do.
Using the voluntary sector; all for it. But do council chiefs really understand the dynamics of the sector?
Anyway, it's heavy stuff and you'll have your own views. I'd be interested in hearing them.

Hi Herb,
Apparently my Urmston net cookie had expired, but all is sorted now. Thanks Dave, it's appreciated.
No skullduggery connected to the absence of
http://www.gorsehill-labour.co.uk in your favourites. I've pretty much learnt as I've gone along; and I've realised that as the site gets bigger it gets harder to change all the links etc, and that this would be easier if I used a bit of rudimentary 'php' which allows you to have the common bits in separate files. So index.htm is now index.php. This makes no difference when you type the address but I bet it does if you've saved the address in favourites. Sorry for the inconvenience Herb; I didn't see it coming. If it's any consolation it's only a week since I made the change.

No I have not moved to Gorse Hill, but if, as you say on your blog, you have not got access thru Urmston.net then why the new link? I had made your old link a 'favorite' which now does not link to your blog, so why the change? Or is it just political skullduggery?

I notice that the Gorse Hill councillors blog has now disappeared, is this because they don't need our votes until May 2011?

Hi Rita,
I'm one of the Urmston councillors and would be happy to come and visit you if you have an issue you want to discuss. We run monthly surgeries for our ward in Urmston library which should be advertised in the library and also surgeries at 146 Flixton Road. The truth is that it's sadly a rare occurrence for someone to actually turn up to our drop in surgeries, so I prefer to go and meet people directly if they have a problem that they want assistance with. You can email me on james.wibberley@trafford.gov.uk if you'd like me to call around.

Do the local councillors still do "surgeries" or is it all just email contact now? Couldn't find info on Trafford website or in the Messenger. Was wondering about the Davyhulme West team and the Urmston ones.

Mandy - The Wimpey estate is between junctions 9 & 10 of the M60. You can get to it from Barton Road, Shetland Circle or Lostock Road near the George H Carnel sports centre.

This may be a very stupid question but I am not originally from this area. Where is the Wimpey estate?

Tom – You are not the first person to have suggested that I try to be a councillor over the years, but as I do not have any political allegiances I would have to put up as an independent, which is a losing battle right from the start. I was told many years ago, by a very senior now retired Tory councillor that the Tories don’t (or didn’t then) even canvas the Wimpey estate because they know most vote Tory.

Herb, why don't you become a councillor? You have the interests of the community at heart, and you're clearly engaged with the process.

Still no response from the DT6, but at least I have had a reply, & I must add a very prompt reply, from TMBC planning dept (see other forum items)

Boblet - I would consider voting for anybody that is prepared to talk to me NOW, rather than than in May when they want my vote. The DT6, & especially my DT3 for Davyhulme East all have access to my name, address, phone number & email address yet they don't seem to want to talk, even when I contact THEM, which I have done over the past few days.

Herb, the answer is no, you won't be able to vote out the DT6 in May - because Councillors are elected on a rotating basis...
Who would you vote for in their place though?

So it now looks like the DT6 do not even 'work' on a Monday. In reply to the various suggestions as to how to contact my local councilors, I have done that over the years but now just get ignored. At one time I was even told that I was the 'most contacted voter' from one of my councilors, so it just goes to show that we are not all equal at all times. I say this because I must have gone from this 'most contacted voter' to being totally ignored especially thru email. I know that my local councilors look at what we are saying on this forum site, but I wonder whether they have been told not to answer any of our points, especially the DT6. Still, come the revolution, when we get to vote in May 2010 we may be able to vote out the DT6?

Sherbert - I suggest you visit the Council website and check. It's probably quicker than typing a message on this forum.

Chalkie,
No confusion at all:
The elected councillors provide the policies,
Elected by us, to serve us and should keep us informed and listen to us, that is what they are there for.

There seems to be some confusion on this thread as to the role and duties of a local councillor. Hopefully this copy and paste from www.direct.gov.uk can clarify them a little
“Councillors are not paid a salary or wages, but they are entitled to allowances and expenses to cover some of the costs of carrying out their public duties. They are not council employees. The elected councillors provide the policies, and then paid employees (council officers) put them into practice.”

Jacks,
I don't doubt that you are grateful for the work they put into your case, but that does not excuse the fact that they do not embrace the electorate with information unless it is near to voting time. It is easier to get information from the Freemasons than it is from members of the Council. I don't understand why they keep out of the way so much, I know for a fact that some read this website but just choose to ignore it all, it is as if they have something to hide.

Steak and Herb - I live in the Flixton ward and cannot thank my 3 councillors enough for all the hard work they put in when the Planning Permission for Bowfell Court was put before Trafford MBC Executive meeting.
They worked long and hard behind the scenes ensuring that the views of the local residents were heard and that the correct decision was made in our favour.
Its all well and good slating the councillors on this website - e-mail them or phone them on the direct lines (numbers are on the Trafford MBC Website) if you want a quick reply.
They are human after all and some have other employment besides being councillors and that most meetings are held in the evening - not just a 9 - 5 job.
If you don't like what they do or not do use your vote at the ballot box - they were elected by local residents and its up to local residents to re-elect them - but remember the grass is not always greener.

Come on Herb,
a) You should not use the word (Work)
b) Mon - Fri (less time off)
c) 9 - 5 (less late start, early finish, long lunch breaks and don't forget jolly trips)
And they think they do a good job.

Looks like our Davyhulme Tory 6 must work a 9-5 Monday - Friday week.

Herb,
You know the saying "if you can't stand the heat" well I think it applies to our councillors, they are either too frightened, can't be bothered or don't know anything, I think it is a combination of the lot, they just want to hide away for a quiet life and just consider us a nuisance because we want to ask questions that they do not want to answer.

From another forum post I notice that the Labour councilors in Gorse Hill have their own blog to keep the voters in formed of what is happening. So how about the 6 councilors of Davyhulme East/West doing the same? They have had the Davyhulme seats sown up for several years now & most of them don't even answer emails so they do not keep us informed of what is happening in the area.

"On contacting my three local councilors today (18th October 2.00pm) via email..."
"....he will get back to me when he returns late on 16th October."
So the councillor will reply to Herb's e-mail when he returns, two days before the e-mail was sent. Good going that!

On contacting my three local councilors today (18th October 2.00pm) via email I get an 'out of office' auto reply saying that he will get back to me when he returns late on 16th October. I am wondering what has happened in the two days missing?
