Urmston, lying in the north west corner of the Borough of Trafford, has a resident population of some 39,400. With unemployment of 2% the area is generally more prosperous and less socially deprived than some other areas of Trafford. The proportion of owner occupied houses and car ownership is significantly above the Borough average. Also in comparison with Trafford and the rest of the UK as a whole Urmston has a higher number of skilled workers. The area is predominately residential. In all, the businesses in the area employ some 6,800 people.
